Hoaxes WhatsApp

How to be a more cautious media consumer:

Mathilde Damgé and Smauel Laurent (two fact-checkers) have published some hoaxes related with the terrorist attacks on Paris. At the bottom of the article, there are some tips to avoid misinformation during a crisis:

Strange publications on internet are mostly false.

Use information of important media and journalists. It’s better to wait for this information instead of sharing the same fact.

Don’t use the first photo that you see, it can be old or modified.

You always have to compare the information of different media.

Why is so hard to avoid misinformatiuon on WhatsApp?

Beacuse groups are limited to 256 people, making it hard for fact-checkers to see when and where fake news goes viral, and all messages are automatically encrypted

How some fact-cheking organizations try to combat this misinformation?

They have bolstered their efforts to combat misinformation on the platform. Some organizations have created institutional WhatsApp accounts to receive and respond to messages about fake news, photos and memes, which users send if they see something suspicious on the platform.

Write some example of fake news.

Storms in sub-Saharan Africa, Catalan independence vote, fake kidnapping schemes in Brazil, etc.
